Sagging Gutters
A sagging gutter has lost its brackets: they've broken, rusted, pulled out of soft fascia, or were too far apart from the start. New brackets at the right spacing and the run reset to its fall fixes it, €80 to €450 in Dublin. If the fascia behind is rotten, the board is fixed first.

- About 1 mbetween brackets on plastic gutters
- 1 screwdriverto test the fascia
Why gutters sag
- Brackets too far apart: plastic gutters want a bracket about every metre, closer on a big roof or where snow sits.
- Brackets broken: old plastic brackets go brittle and snap, often after a ladder has leaned on the gutter.
- Screws pulled out: the fascia behind has gone soft, so the screws have nothing to hold.
- Weight: a gutter full of wet moss and water is heavy enough to pull a weak run down.
The screwdriver test
From a ladder, push a screwdriver into the fascia board beside a bracket. If it sinks in, the timber is rotten and new brackets won't hold. The board then needs a new section, or the whole roofline replacing. Rotten fascia boards are on our sister site.

Questions people ask
Is a sagging gutter dangerous?
A loaded run can come down, and it's heavy. Keep people from under it and get it refixed.
Can I push it back up?
Not safely from a ladder, and it'll drop again without new brackets.
Why did it sag after a ladder leaned on it?
Old plastic brackets snap under a ladder's weight. Ladders go against the wall, with a stand-off, never the gutter.
