What goes wrong with cast iron
- Joints: the bolted joints dry out and rust. Water then rusts the iron from the inside.
- Cracks: a length that's been standing full of water and frozen can crack along the bottom.
- Paint: once the paint goes, rust starts. The inside of the gutter needs paint too.
- Brackets: rusted brackets or rafter spikes let a heavy length drop.
