What VAT rate applies to domestic gutter work in Ireland?
Cleaning, repair and replacement work on a home is charged at the reduced 13.5% VAT rate when labour makes up most of the cost. Ask for a written quote with VAT included.
Why do gutters overflow in heavy rain even after a clean?
If the gutter channel is clear and water still spills over the front edge, either the downpipe outlet or underground gulley trap is blocked, or the gutter brackets have sagged and lost their fall towards the downpipe.
How often should gutters be cleared on a Dublin house?
Once a year in late November or December after the autumn leaves are down, or twice a year (late autumn and spring) if mature trees overhang the roof.
What causes a uPVC gutter joint to drip?
The rubber EPDM seal inside the union bracket perishes, shrinks or gets gritty with roof moss, or the gutter lengths were cut slightly short so thermal movement pulls the joint apart.
Can a single leaking gutter joint be repaired without replacing the whole run?
Yes. If the uPVC lengths are not brittle, fitting a new union bracket or rubber seal and adding a support clip beside the joint stops the drip.
How far apart should uPVC gutter fascia brackets be spaced?
No more than 800 mm to 1,000 mm apart along the fascia board, with extra brackets within 150 mm of every union joint, corner angle and running outlet.
What is the difference between half-round, square-line and ogee uPVC gutters?
Half-round is the standard rounded profile on older semis; square-line and ogee hold more water and suit larger roof areas, though parts from different profiles need an adaptor where they join on a semi or terrace.
How long do uPVC, continuous aluminium and cast-iron gutters last?
uPVC gutters typically last 20 to 25 years before UV light makes them brittle; powder-coated continuous aluminium lasts 30 to 40+ years; maintained cast iron lasts 50+ years.
Can gutters be cleared from the ground without a ladder?
Yes. High-reach gutter vacuum poles with a camera let cleaners clear two-storey and three-storey gutters from the ground, though stubborn downpipe blockages may still need rodding.
Why is water running down the wall behind the gutter?
The roofing felt at the eaves has perished behind the fascia board, allowing rainwater off the bottom row of tiles to miss the gutter. Rigid eaves support trays slid under the bottom tiles fix this.
What should I check if a downpipe is overflowing at the shoe or gulley?
Leaves and roof moss often pack tightly in the swan-neck bend at the top of the downpipe or in the ground-level gulley trap. Rodding the downpipe and clearing the gulley grate restores flow.
Are apartment blocks and managed estates covered?
Yes. Multi-storey apartment blocks and managed estates in Dublin are priced per block or run.
Do I have to book the company that rings me?
No. The quote is free and carries no obligation. Nothing is booked until you agree a price.
