Dublin

Why Dublin gutters block and leak

Dublin gets about 772 mm of rain a year over 137 wet days, and the wettest single day on record at the station is 74 mm (Met Éireann 1991–2020 averages). October and November bring 78 and 83 mm, just as the leaves come down. A gutter half full of moss overflows in the first heavy shower.

Trees make the difference. The 2017 Dublin Tree Canopy Survey put tree cover at just under 19% of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and 17.3% of South Dublin, against 10% of Dublin City and 6.5% of Fingal. Old houses add their own problems: 29% of homes in the city council area were built before 1946, many with box gutters behind a parapet or cast iron at the front.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Dublin?

€70 to €200 for a 2 or 3-bed house, up to €280 with a full flush-out of the downpipes, and €120 to €210 for a 4-bed detached house. See gutter cleaning.

How much do new gutters cost?

New uPVC gutters and downpipes on a semi cost €600 to €1,900, seamless aluminium €1,200 to €3,400. The Dublin price guide has every job.

How long does it take?

A clean or a repair is an hour or two. New gutters on a semi take about a day; scaffolding or cast iron adds time.

Is there a grant?

Not for an ordinary house. On a protected structure, the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, through your council, can help with repairs to cast iron and lead rainwater goods.

Will it make a mess?

Very little. Cleaning waste is bagged and taken away, old gutters leave in the van, and the ground is swept before they go. All the work is outside.

Is the work guaranteed?

Ask for the guarantee in writing with the price: the company's on the workmanship, and the maker's on new gutters.

Who comes out to my house?

One gutter company that covers your part of Dublin. They look, price it in writing and do the work. We pass your request on; we don't do the work ourselves, and your details go to one company only.

I rent. Who pays for the gutters?

Usually the landlord. Under section 12 of the Residential Tenancies Act 2004, the landlord has to carry out repairs to the structure, and in apartments the management company looks after the common parts, which normally include the roof and gutters.
