Which material

uPVC, aluminium or cast iron

uPVC is on most Dublin houses: light, no painting, €25 to €40 a metre fitted. Seamless aluminium is rolled on site in one length per side, so there are no joints to leak: €55 to €90 a metre. Cast iron belongs on period houses; on a protected structure it should be repaired or replaced like for like: €90 to €160 a metre.

The day

What happens on the day

  1. Ladders or a tower up.
  2. Old gutters and downpipes down.
  3. Fascia checked; soft spots fixed.
  4. New brackets set to fall to the outlets.
  5. Gutters clipped in, downpipes fitted.
  6. A hose test, the old gutters taken away.

Protected houses

Period houses and the council

On a protected structure, normal planning exemptions don't necessarily apply, and swapping cast iron for plastic can change its character. Ask the council's conservation officer first. The Built Heritage Investment Scheme, run through the councils, funds repairs to historic rainwater goods.
